LED Video Wall Content Creation:
The Pro Standards

LED Video Wall Content Creation john carboni.jpg

Creating content for LED walls is fundamentally different from designing for a computer monitor. At Impact Studios, we bridge the gap between creative design and the physical realities of large-format hardware.

1. Precision Scaling: Resolution vs. Pixel Pitch

Professional LED content starts with a 1:1 pixel match. Unlike standard monitors, LED walls often feature non-standard aspect ratios and custom dimensions.

  • Pixel-for-Pixel Accuracy: We design to the wall's exact pixel dimensions to prevent scaling artifacts and blurry "muddy" visuals.

  • Custom Ratios: Large-scale architectural displays often bypass the standard 16:9 format. We build custom canvases that utilize 100% of your available screen real estate without stretching or black bars.

2. Designing for Distance: The 50-Foot Rule

Typography and graphics must be optimized for viewing distances that often exceed 50 feet.

Viewing Distance Optimization

Viewing Distance Optimization Table
Distance Min. Text Height Motion Strategy
Indoor (10-20 ft) 4-6 inches Smooth, fluid dissolves
Auditorium (30-50 ft) 10-12 inches High-contrast kinetic
Outdoor (100+ ft) 24+ inches Bold, simple icons & high-contrast text

3. Color, Contrast, and Kinetic Motion

LEDs naturally amplify vibrancy and brightness. Our workflow ensures your content delivers impact without overwhelming the audience.

  • Vibrancy Balance: We leverage the LED's natural saturation while preventing "crushed" blacks or "blown-out" highlights.

  • Cinematic Motion: We maintain frame rates of 30 FPS or higher. We avoid rapid, jerky transitions that fail to translate on massive surfaces, opting instead for deliberate, cinematic movement.

The Technical Edge: For persistent color banding issues on large displays, we implement 10-bit color depth with dithered noise overlays to ensure silky-smooth gradients across the entire wall.

4. Filming the Wall: Avoiding the Moiré Pattern

Capturing presenters in front of an LED wall is one of the most difficult shots in production. We solve the two biggest technical hurdles:

  • The Moiré Fix: To prevent distracting interference patterns, we maintain a minimum 8-10 foot separation between the subject and the LED tiles, adjusting shutter angles to sync with the wall’s refresh rate. Use an Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF) on any cameras that you will be shooting with.

  • Exposure Balance: A wall at 100% brightness will blow out your camera sensor. We typically pull the LED brightness down to 30-50% to achieve a professional exposure balance between the background and the speaker.
